Role and Responsibilities:

As a Practice Nurse at Macksville Medical, you will:

  • Report to the Senior Practice Nurse and Directors for clinical issues, and the Practice Manager for non-clinical issues.
  • Provide clinical support to the healthcare team to facilitate comprehensive patient care management.
  • Assist practitioners as required.
  • Represent the practice professionally at all times.
  • Adhere to all relevant practice policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in achieving the practice’s objectives.
  • Maintain high standards of infection control throughout the practice.
  • Engage in quality improvement activities.

Key Duties:

  • Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Use standard precautions when handling body substances and manage sharps disposal appropriately.
  • Dispose of contaminated waste safely and store it securely.
  • Order, store, and rotate practice stock appropriately.
  • Maintain the cold chain for vaccine and medicine storage.
  • Report incidents and errors to the Practice Manager.
  • Provide clinical support to medical practitioners, clinical staff, and management.
  • Manage patient care by demonstrating skills in wound care, ear syringing, vaccinations, medication administration, minor surgery assistance, specimen collection, venepuncture, vital sign monitoring, tympanography, ECG monitoring, health promotion, and patient triage.
  • Conduct thorough health assessments and maintain accurate medical records.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Authority and experience in childhood and other immunisations, or willingness to obtain.
  • Maintain annual CPR training in line with immunisation authority.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Self-directing and efficient with minimal supervision.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
  • Ability to follow and adapt to practice policies and procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Focus on quality improvement.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of diverse patient needs.
  • Experience in patient care, including small procedures, wound care, and ear syringing.

  • Experience in developing care plans and health assessments.
  • Flexible approach to working arrangements and changing conditions.
  • Ability to embrace new initiatives.
  • Interest in professional development.

Performance Indicators:

  • Communicate professionally, friendly, and informatively with all stakeholders.
  • Deliver clear and concise information to patients, families, carers, medical practitioners, allied health practitioners, and other stakeholders.
  • Follow the practice complaints procedure and refer complaints to the Practice Manager.
  • Act as a responsive and responsible team member.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Read all communications from management and seek clarification when necessary.
  • Undertake continuing professional development through in-house and external education sessions.
  • Seek out additional tasks during low activity periods to assist the practice.
  • Arrive punctually for rostered shifts.
  • Request and obtain approval for overtime/additional hours from the Practice Manager.
  • Apply for and obtain approval for leave/alteration to working hours from the Senior Practice Nurse and Practice Manager.
